Boot Camp for School Counselors

Introducing Counselors to the Actual Workplace

Boot Camp, created and introduced by Lawrence County School-To-Work in 2010, takes the School Counselors on a one-day bus trip to various companies to tour and learn about local businesses. This helps the counselors understand the variety of occupations that exist in the area as well as the education and training required to be eligible for those occupations. It is an experience which allows them to create an arsenal of information to be shared with their students and colleagues. Since the beginning of the program, 50 employers have been visited.

The companies are asked to include in their presentations the following information along with any handouts. Following the presentation, the business facility is toured.

  • Company History/Product/Customer Base
  • Number of Employees
  • Occupations/Education/Skills of both shop floor and office/support staff
  • General Wage Information
  • Benefits – Tuition Reimbursement, Job Training for Advancement
  • Pre-Employment Hiring – Aptitude Surveys/Drug Testing, etc.
  • Hiring Challenges – Soft Skills/Hard Skills Deficiencies
